We do not set our own tracking or advertising cookies. Google sets cookies to show and measure ads and to remember your consent choice, Cloudflare sets one to block bots, and two of our pages keep a list of calculators in your browser for the current tab. Every calculator works without cookies.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website saves in your browser so it can recognise the browser later. Websites also use similar technologies: local storage and session storage (data kept by the browser for one site), pixels, and device identifiers. This policy covers all of them, and calls them "cookies" for short.

First-party cookies are set by the site you are visiting. Third-party cookies are set by another company's service on that site, such as an ad network.

What we set ourselves

We do not set any first-party cookie that tracks you or is used for advertising. The only item our own code stores is a cached list of calculators, which makes the Home and Calculators pages load faster.

WordPress sets login cookies only for people who sign in to manage the site. Visitors never sign in, so they never receive them.

Cookies set by our partners

Security: Cloudflare

Cloudflare protects the site from bots and attacks. Its cookies are strictly necessary, so they are set without consent, and they do not track you across other websites.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland see a consent banner from Google's certified consent tool. These cookies store the choice you make so the banner does not reappear on every page.

Advertising: Google AdSense

Google uses these cookies to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure ad performance and detect fraud. Where consent is required, personalised advertising cookies are only used if you accept them; non-personalised ads can still use cookies for frequency capping, measurement and fraud prevention.

Statistics: Google Analytics

These cookies count visits and show which calculators are used. Where consent is required, they are only set after you accept them.

Cookie names and lifetimes are set by Google and Cloudflare, not by us, and they change from time to time. The current lists are on Google's cookie page and in Cloudflare's cookie documentation.

In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, the consent banner appears before any advertising or analytics cookie is set. You can accept all, reject all, or choose by purpose, and the site works the same whichever you pick.

To change your choice later, use the privacy and cookie settings link or button shown on the site, which reopens the consent tool. Visitors elsewhere can control ads through Google's My Ad Center and their browser settings.

Manage cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you see, block and delete cookies. Blocking third-party cookies stops most cross-site ad tracking without affecting the calculators.

Where to find cookie settings
BrowserPath to cookie settings
ChromeSettings, Privacy and security, Third-party cookies
Safari (Mac)Settings, Privacy, Prevent cross-site tracking; Manage Website Data
Safari (iPhone and iPad)Settings app, Apps, Safari, Prevent Cross-Site Tracking
FirefoxSettings, Privacy and Security, Enhanced Tracking Protection
EdgeSettings, Privacy, search and services, Tracking prevention; Cookies and site permissions

You can also opt out of personalised ads from many companies at aboutads.info, or in the EU and UK at youronlinechoices.eu. On a phone, your device's advertising settings let you reset or limit the advertising ID.

What happens if you block cookies

Every calculator, guide and download still works, because the calculators do not rely on cookies. You may see ads that are less related to your interests, or the consent banner again on a later visit. If you block all cookies and Cloudflare shows a security check, you may need to allow cookies for that check to pass.

Changes to this policy

We update this page when we add or remove a service that uses cookies, or when a partner changes its cookies in a way that matters. The effective date at the top shows the last change. How we handle personal data more generally is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Frequently asked questions

No. Calculators send your figures to our server and show the result without using cookies, so they work even if you block all cookies. Only ads, statistics and some security checks use cookies.

Because the law in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland requires consent before non-essential cookies are used. The banner comes from Google's certified consent tool and lets you accept, reject or choose by purpose.

Use the privacy and cookie settings link or button on the site to reopen the consent tool and change your choice. You can also delete the site's cookies in your browser settings, which brings the banner back on your next visit.

We do not. Google may use advertising cookies to personalise ads based on other sites you visit, but only with your consent where that is required. You can turn this off at any time in My Ad Center.

Only the public list of our calculators, saved under the name mec-calcs-v5 on the Home and Calculators pages. It holds no personal data and is removed when you close the tab.
