Why every calculator starts with a country

A tax, pay or property figure is only right for one country and one tax year, because each country sets its own rates, thresholds and dates. A take-home pay figure built on UK rules is wrong for an Australian payslip even before the currency changes, so every calculator here applies one country's rules and says which year it uses.

Each country's tax year and the label our calculators use for it
CountryTax year runsCurrent labelCalculators
United Kingdom6 April to 5 April2026/2712
Australia1 July to 30 June2026-2712
Canada1 January to 31 December20269
New Zealand1 April to 31 March2026/273
USA1 January to 31 December20264

Within a country, some rules change again by region. Scotland sets its own Income Tax bands, Australian states set stamp duty and payroll tax, Canadian provinces set vacation and overtime rules, and US states can add income tax and daily overtime. Where that happens, the calculator asks for your region.

How the five countries compare in 2026

New Zealand is the only one of the five countries with no tax-free amount, taxing the first dollar at 10.5%, while Australia lets residents earn A$18,200 before income tax starts. The table sets the headline figures side by side; each country hub has the full rate tables and sources.

Australia's Medicare levy is charged through the tax return rather than as a separate payroll contribution, and Australian employers pay 12% super on top of wages instead. Canada's CPP figure excludes EI at 1.63%, and Canada's sales tax rises to 13% to 15% in the HST provinces.

How every calculator is built and checked

Every calculator goes through the same four steps before it is published, and again when a rate it uses changes. The full process is in our Editorial Policy.

  1. Research. Rates, thresholds and rules are taken from the government body that sets them and cited by name, such as HMRC's employer rates or Ontario's Employment Standards Act, 2000.
  2. Calculation. The formula is written out step by step with every rate held as a named value linked to its source, and the result comes back with a full breakdown.
  3. Verification. Each formula is modelled independently, and the live calculator must match the model on test cases, including values at every threshold.
  4. Updates. When a rate changes, the calculator, its worked examples and its source dates are re-checked together, and the page's Updated date changes.

How to read a calculator result

A calculator result is an estimate built from four things: the figures you enter, the country or region you choose, the tax or rate year, and the assumptions the page states. Change any one of them and the result changes.

A result is not your final tax bill, payslip, mortgage offer or official assessment. Other income, deductions, credits, tax codes, residency, contracts and lender criteria can change the real figure. For a decision that matters, confirm the number with the official body or a qualified adviser.

If a result looks wrong, check your inputs, then the year and region. If it still looks wrong, tell us the calculator, the inputs you used and the official source that shows a different figure, and we will re-check it.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about how the calculators work, what they cover and how far to rely on them.

Yes. Every calculator is free, with no paywall, subscription or sign-up. The site is supported by clearly labelled advertising, which is kept away from calculator inputs and results and never affects a figure.

The calculators cover the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. Each one applies a single country's rules, and where states, provinces or nations set different rates, it asks for yours.

Each country sets its own tax year, rates, thresholds and employment rules, so one formula cannot be right everywhere. New Zealand has no tax-free amount, for example, while Australia lets residents earn A$18,200 before income tax starts.

A calculator is re-checked whenever a rate or rule it uses changes, which for most tax and pay figures means at least once a year when the new tax year starts. Each page shows its Updated date and the year it covers.

Results are estimates built from official rates and checked against an independent model before publishing. They are only as good as the figures you enter, and they cannot see personal details such as other income, credits or tax codes.

No account is needed and no personal details are asked for. The figures you enter are sent to our server to calculate your result and may appear in standard server logs. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Yes. Every calculator works on a phone screen, with large tap targets and number keypads on number fields, and most let you download the result as a PDF or CSV file.

No. Results are estimates for planning and are not financial, tax, legal or investment advice. Confirm an important figure with the official body, your employer, your lender or a qualified adviser before you act on it.
